While traveling this summer, we went with friends exploring the Oklahoma section of Route 66. One of our favorite stops was the Pops Soda Shop in Arcadia, OK. It is easily accessed by Hwy 35, just north of Oklahoma City. The soda shop features a dizzying variety of sodas from the ordinary to the weird (or just plain gross). Some of the flavors were: Kitty Piddle, Martian Poop and Doggie Drool. Then there were the sodas which were “food” flavored such as peanut butter and jelly, corn or bacon (yuck!). We did a taste test with Martian Poop (a marionberry flavor), which we all decided was nasty. The Kitty Piddle was surprisingly delicious, kind of a pineapple/orange flavor. We also tried a Japanese grape soda, which had a mild taste, kind of like Shasta grape. Opening the Japanese soda was a challenge. The top was sealed with a marble which had to be pushed into the soda to unseal it. I felt like an idiot, but I had to ask the waitress how to open it after several failed attempts! The menu had a large variety of entrees (typical American diner type food). We ordered quesadillas, grilled cheese, cheeseburgers and string fries. We ate in the outdoor seating area, since the inside was packed. There were large umbrellas to shade diners, which is very important in the Oklahoma 90+ degree summer weather. The diner was surrounded by open farmland, which provided a peaceful background. The service was a bit slow, but it allowed us to browse the shop and purchase some fun sodas and a memento or two. Definitely a fun place to stop for lunch or dinner.
